The first teeth that puppies get in are the canine teeth which erupt around 3 to 4 weeks of age. These are the longer teeth on each side in the front of their mouth. The incisors (tiny teeth in front) and the premolars (larger side teeth) start coming in about 4 to 6 weeks of age. The pups should have all their baby teeth by the age of 8 weeks which total 28.

As most of you may know puppy teeth are sharp as little needles when they are young. That is why people will start puppies on a gruel or mushy food about 3 weeks old. It makes life a little easier for the bitch as the pups teeth will soon become uncomfortable for her. When this food is offered to the pups it also makes weaning the pups easier.

At or about 4 to 5 months old the pups will begin shedding their baby teeth. By age 7 to 8 months all the permanent incisors canines premolars and molars should be in. Most adult dog breeds have a total of 42 permanent teeth.

Puppy Teething

All puppies love to chew. They chew on things because it eases the discomfort of teething and they chew too out of boredom. You may have noticed that they chew on or 'mouth' each other. This is a form of playing with each other. When they are young it is natural for them to chew on things as they explore the new world. That's just part of being a puppy and will continue as they grow and mature. Although at a certain point in their life they must learn especially with their sharp teeth that chewing on everything is not acceptable. The pup must be taught to chew only on certain things like his toys and not to 'nip' our hands or face. To train your pup to stop 'nipping' you can say the word 'no' in a loud forceful voice and stop playing with him for a minute or two. He will learn over time that you don't like this 'rough playing' and will stop doing it.

I know that your first thought when the pup nips at your face or hands would be to slap the pups mouth because the pup hurt you and you want to let the pup know that it hurt; but this will only make matters worse. Hitting or slapping a pup or adult dog could lead to making him aggressive or even become hand shy; meaning that if you raise your hand toward him even if it's to pet him he will back up or cower down because he is afraid you might hit him again.

This is why you need patience time and love to raise well-adjusted puppies that will do well when they go out into this big wide world and not be afraid of anything or anybody.

Tips

Puppy Teething - Try giving your pup a large carrot to chew on to help relieve sore gums they get with teething. Freeze a wet 'rope toy' as this will ease the pain of teething with a cooling effect on the gums. You can also freeze beef broth in ice cube trays and give him one to chew on or you can go to your local pet store to buy puppy teething toys.

Playtime and exercise - To help keep the pup (or adult dog) from getting bored or from chewing on things he is not suppose to let him have plenty of playtime and exercise.

Acceptable Toys - Give the pup (and adult dog) plenty of safe toys to chew on. Never give them toys that pieces could be chewed off and swallowed. I found the safest toys for my dogs are Kong toys. Kong toys can also be filled with treats that could keep the dogs busy for hours and they come in all sizes.

Puppy proof home - To help the pup from chewing on items you don't want him to chew on keep things picked up. Especially small items he could swallow. Look around on the floor for paperclips pencils loose change and/or medicine bottles that fell on the floor and place your shoes or slippers where he can't get them and keep electrical cords out of his reach. Basically anything that doesn't belong on the floor or in their reach should be picked up.

It's a good idea to teach your dog to release whatever he is chewing on in case he gets a hold of something you don't want him to have. This way if it's dangerous for him say 'give' and he will let go. When he releases it praise him and replace it with one of his toys

Keep electrical cords out of their reach. Basically anything that doesn't belong on the floor or in their reach should be picked up (pens paperclips pencils TV remotes garbage medicine bottles etc.) and use a baby gate to keep the pups out of any area you don't want them in.

Teeth Whitening Dentist - Don't Do These Things If You Have A Teething Baby

There's been a lot written about teething remedies over the years. Some of it is good advice but there's a lot of 'old wives tales' too. Just as important is knowing what not to do when baby is cutting those first teeth.

1. Don't use pain relief gel too often - If you overuse the gel it may numb baby's throat and disable his gag reflex - a gag reflex keeps him from choking. Although these types of teething remedies are usually safe they can cause an allergic reaction in some people.

2. Don't put anything sweet like honey on pacifiers or dummies. Your baby will soon expect the sweet taste and may reject a normal pacifier. The sugar could decay any teeth that are already formed.

3. Don't offer baby fruit juice in a bottle - Fruit juice even squeezed fresh contains a lot of sugar. It also contains acid which can dissolve tooth enamel. Give natural fruit juices in a cup rather than a bottle which may remain in the mouth longer.

4. Don't use toothpaste containing a lot of fluoride - A baby will swallow the toothpaste so use a children's toothpaste with less fluoride (or no fluoride) until they are able to spit it out by themselves. Fluoride is toxic in excess.

5. Don't rub gums with alcohol - Alcohol is not up there with the best teething remedies but some parents insist on using it. Maybe they think alcohol will help baby sleep better - it won't!

6. Please don't tie your baby's teething ring around his neck - It may get caught in something and strangle him. Attach it to his clothes instead.

7. Don't offer any teething rings which contain liquid - Avoid rubber or plastic teething rings with liquid inside because they may break and leak. If you do use a teething ring cool it in the freezer for a while. However don't forget to take it out before it solidifies it may hurt baby's sore gums.

8. Don't forget to clean mild teeth each day - Why bother cleaning teeth that are soon going to fall out? Milk teeth can decay easily and fall out before their time. Those first teeth serve as a guide for the second teeth appearing after. Without the milk teeth to guide them the second teeth may be crooked and misaligned. As well cleaning those first teeth teaches children good habits. Habits picked up at an early age usually stay with us for life.

9. Don't dose your baby up with Tylenol (acetaminophen) - Although it's generally thought to be safe Tylenol may cause damage to the liver on overdose. Never exceed the maximum daily dosage!

10. Never give you baby aspirin. Aspirin has been linked to Reye's Syndrome a potentially fatal condition in children. although it's rare why take the risk?

You're probably wondering if there's anything you can do. There's plenty!

Pop a damp face washer in the freezer for a while and let your baby chew on it. The cold will help soothe sore gums. Rubber teething rings or rings filled with water are fine to use put these in the fridge too.
